Happy Birthday. You're Getting Old.

Well my birthday is tomorrow. I'll be 27. I'm not that old but the idea that 30 isn't far feels weird.  I feel a quarter life crisis coming on. Maybe I'll go out and buy a sports car or something. That's what you're supposed to do right?

My awesome husband always knows what to get me even when I don't know. He listens to stuff I say I want and buys them. I have a pretty bad memory so I'm always surprised. Well I've been saying for a while I wanted an apple corer, but I didn't want the one that cuts the apple into slices. I've also wanted a makeup mirror now that I am a makeup pro and all. So today I get a package from Amazon. He says "Happy Birthday!"  I open it and there are two things I forgot I wanted! Now I can successfully put on makeup and make my apple breakfast slices I found on Pinterest.

The best mirror ever

My fancy apple corer

So of course I had to try out my new mirror. It has one of those flip mirrors with one side that is magnified. Well I haven't done my eyebrows in a while. I thought I would try the mirror out. Let me say if you don't have a makeup mirror I suggest you get one. So as I'm plucking my eyebrows I see something I've never seen before. I have a grey eyebrow! GREY!!! Talk about a birthday present that screams you are getting older. Of course I got rid of as fast as possible. I probably have grey hairs on my head too but I dye my hair so often that I don't get a chance to see them.

Anyways thanks to my fancy mirror I have the best looking eyebrows on the block!

Oh and while we were at the store today we found these fancy brownies topped with sea salt. I decided that is what I wanted instead of a birthday cake.

I plan on having a low key birthday where I don't get dressed and I watch movies all day. Oh and eat brownies. I can't think of a better way to spend my day.

Movie, Dinner and Cupcakes... Oh My!

So after all the crap I went through Saturday morning I decided to make the best of the rest of the weekend. I mean I can't sit around and cry all weekend. I'm better than that. So I went and cashed my birthday check and decided to have a little fun with it.

I first went to the gym and worked all my anger out. My husband and I have been wanting to see the new Quentin Tarantino movie Django Unchained. I am a huge Tarantino fan just so you know. So since we were going out for a movie why not go out for dinner too. Rob loves pizza and tries to eat it every chance he gets. Well there is this food trailer that has Detroit style pizza called Via 313. Being from Indiana I am a fan of Chicago style. So I was skeptical about this pizza. We got two different pizzas and shared them. They were kind of like deep dish pizza but square and really good!

Next we went to the movies. If you haven't seen Django Unchained yet drop what you are doing and go see it right now. It was the best movie I've seen so far this year. Yeah I know it's January. It was about 3 hours long but it didn't seem that long. If you know Quentin Tarantino then you know this movie is graphic, bloody and controversial. Oh and AWESOME!. Did you drop what you are doing yet? Go see it!!! Then report back what you thought. Oh yeah and we both got carded to see it. I know I'm not that old but it felt good to be carded again.

Tonight I wanted to bake cupcakes. My boss comes back from having back surgery tomorrow and I thought what better way to welcome him back than cupcakes. I found a recipe for cannoli cupcakes. Here is the site   www.cookingclassy.com/2012/10/cannoli-cupcakes/
She has lots of yummy looking recipes.

Holy Cannoli

They turned out so good! Hopefully my coworkers will agree. Until then I will practice some self control and only eat two...tonight.

This Is My Sad Post

My posts are generally upbeat, but sadly this one is not. I couldn't help but share how my morning went today. Well my birthday is coming up at the end of the month which means birthday cards. Well I got a birthday from a family member and called to thank them for the gift.

Before I get into the story I should explain a few things. If you haven't figured out yet I'm married. Well my husband is half Puerto Rican and half black. I'm white. I have a few family members that are racist. Talk about fun. It's not like he's ghetto, has no job and has baby mommas. He has a college degree and a great job that supports both of us. No kids unless you count our dogs.

Anyways I called this family member to thank them for the gift. While on the phone they had a few choice words to say about my husband. They don't agree with race mixing. I don't understand why you would marry someone like that. Blah blah I'm a racist asshole...... They dropped a few derogatory words I chose not to repeat because I don't talk like that. I know how this person thinks and have heard them talk about other people like this but never about my husband. I broke down. They then began to talk about how they don't want me to be controlled because they thought Rob was controlling. My dad had even explained this is not true. In fact I'm the controlling one. If anyone spent any time around us they would know I tell him what to do. If only they knew if he did indeed control me we would have left about 2 hours earlier. In fact we would probably only stay at parties and family get togethers for about a half an hour. I would never get to go out with my friends and stay out until 2 a.m. I make him do things he doesn't want to do, like be social. I'm the bossy one and I'll admit it. I'm the reason we moved to California. Rob wasn't sure about accepting the job and I wanted to get out of Indiana. After their rant they went along talking like nothing had even happened. In the mean time I am holding back tears and just trying to get off the phone. I didn't want to argue. I was too upset to even try and talk. I finally got off the phone and just started to cry my eyes out. Rob had no clue what had just happened he just ran over and held me.

Writing this now is hard for me. I mean we have been together for almost 8 years and still have family members talk bad about him and about our relationship behind our backs. Everyone else in the family sees how happy we are and what a good relationship we have. I mean we have been together longer than my parents marriage. We have never had a major fight because we talk about things before it gets to that point. How many people can say they have been together for 8 years and have never had a fight? Not many. It's just sad that people let their judgement cloud over the real thing. I'm ok with being the black sheep in the family, I've accepted it. I just wish those few people would just accept it for what it is. We're happy and nothing is going to change that. Unfortunately their opinion isn't going to change.

I just had to get this off of my chest. Sorry for the sad story. I promise the next post will be back to normal.

Home For the Holidays

Well the holidays are over. I hope you guys had a great holiday season. I spent my Christmas and New Years in Indiana. Yep cold ass, snow covered Indiana. It had been a few years since we had been home for Christmas so we decided to go. We arrived Christmas eve and left New Year's day. It didn't snow until the day after Christmas but after that I don't think it ever stopped. Talk about luck.

Day 3 of my vacation

Aside from the snow we actually enjoyed ourselves. We got to see all of our family and spend time with them. I got to see my little sister who I missed like crazy. If I could I would kidnap her and have her live with me, but she still needs to finish high school. We house hopped from one side of the town to the other.  I ate lots of good food. For you fellow Fort Wayners I ate ice cream at Atz for the first time. It only took almost 27 years. While we were in town my husband and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary.  We had fancy drinks and a delicious dinner.  If you haven't eaten at Club Soda you should. It's delicious! We had duck confit, my favorite, along with some yummy cocktails.

As much as I love my family I just can't stay in Fort Wayne for too long. If you have been to Indiana in the winter you know there is nothing to do.  After nine days of family and friends it was time to go back to Texas and see my dogs (they were on an extended sleep over at a friends house). We got back to our house to discover that my husband had turned off the heat instead of just turning it down. Well it's been cold here in Texas and inside our house was about 55 degrees. We turned the heat up but it's still cold. Damn these tile floors!! At this moment I am sitting in front of a space heater in sweats with gloves on (I did have a hat on but took it off). Rob says it's not that cold but I'm freezing.

Me trying to stay warm before I put on my gloves

As much as I miss my family I am happy to be home. Now I have to get back into to work mode. Tomorrow I go back to working on people's teeth. Yay! Also back to the gym to drop the pounds I gained.  Double yay..

Merry Cupcakes!

So Rob's work is having their Christmas party tomorrow and I thought I would bake something for them. If you don't know I am awesome at making cupcakes. Ask anyone. They love them.  I have made cupcakes for them in the past and they are always a hit. One of Rob's coworkers said I should own a bakery. If only I had the cash. Talk about my dream job. Anyways, since it's a holiday party I had to make something holiday themed. I've been obsessed with Peppermint white mochas lately. So I thought how about peppermint chocolate cupcakes? Umm yes! So as always I wanted to share this recipe with you lovely people. Let me know what you think.

The delicious final product

Chocolate Cake

1 Box Devil's Food cake
3 eggs
1/2 cup oil
3/4 cup milk
1/2 sour cream
2 tsp. vanilla extract.

Peppermint White Chocolate Buttercream

8 oz. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter (softened)
2-3 tsp peppermint extract
3 cups powdered sugar
1 cup white chocolate chips (chopped finely)

Candy canes (crushed)

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pan with liners
  • In a large bowl mix together eggs, oil, milk, sour cream and vanilla.
  • Slowly mix in cake mix until smooth.
  • Fill cupcake liners and bake for about 15 minutes

  • For the buttercream beat butter and cream cheese until smooth.
  • Add peppermint extract and slowly add powdered sugar
  • Add white chocolate chips that have been chopped.

Use a piping bag and frost each cupcake. Then top with crushed candy canes.

These are AMAZING! Hopefully everyone else agrees. If it wasn't 10:30 at night I would probably sit here and eat 4. Luckily it's late and I'm too tired to stuff my face. Enjoy!

Update On My Makeup Journey

A few weeks ago I talked about my new discovery of makeup. Since then I have made it a thing to wear makeup everyday, except for the lazy days. I went from never wearing eyeliner in my life to wearing it everyday. The first time I used liquid eyeliner it looked like a 3 year old drew on my eyelids. It was horrible. After a few tries I got it down. Starting out I had one mascara and one eye shadow. So I figured I should probably go shopping.  This is what I have so far.

I already had Cover Girl Lash Blast but didn't really like it. I recently purchased Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal. Let me just say I love this stuff. I wanted something to make my lashes POP. It makes my lashes longer and fuller. The only downfall is that it kind of smells like playdough.

As I have said before I get a Birchbox every month with lots of fun samples. Sometimes the samples are full sized. Well I've gotten a few things lately that I really love. The first thing is called Stainiac. It's a lip and cheek stain. I mostly use it for my lips. It adds just a hint of color. Another item is by Wey To Go Beauty. I use it under my eyes to cover my dark circles. I am one of those lucky girls who looks like I got punched in the eyes. That's a lovely trait I got from my dad. The last thing is the Stila all over liquid luminizer. I use this thing as a primer for eye shadow, as a highlighter and so much more. It's the bomb.com

What is your favorite makeup item? What is a staple that you can't go without? I'm still at Kindergarten level so any help is much appreciated. I will keep you all posted with any new discoveries.

Pumping Iron and Dropping Lbs.

If you haven't heard I've become a gym rat. Well I mean I have been for a few months but now it's getting real. I've been seeing a trainer for 4 or 5 months. The first month was pretty easy. I was just getting use to all the equipment. Well now he's got me doing a crazy workout in the bodybuilder's section. You know the area where all the big guys are grunting and throwing weights on the ground. Yup, I'm hanging with the boys now. I'm not going to lie I like the looks I get when I go to do a bench press or some other weight related workout. They look at me like "Are you sure you're ready for that?" Then I start lifting and give them the "Hell yeah I am!" look. You know what I'm talking about.

Well my husband has started working out with me and is seeing the same trainer. As of lately we have been on the same diet. I know men lose weight faster than women but I feel like I'm in a Slimquick commercial.  I have lost 5 lbs in about 2 weeks and he has lost 10. Not that big of a difference BUT he is now wearing his "skinny" jeans and had to tighten his watch. I noticed my scrubs are a little looser. But they are always a little loose. He calls it the injustice weight loss disparity between men and women. I call it just plain unfair. Anyways I shouldn't complain because I've lost weight and have new muscles I've never seen.  It could be worse. I could be heading the other direction. Especially since my favorite cookie shop opened a store down the street from my house. Talk about the ultimate temptation.

On a funny note I was talking with my trainer the other day about food. We were talking about good veggies and protein. I started talking about Kale (which is a favorite in our house) Well he was talking about how he heard it was good and asked me how much it was. I told him usually about $1 a bundle. He gave me this weird look and said "A bundle?" He then proceeded to tell me he though Kale was a type of fish. I corrected him and explained that kale is green and leafy, not gray and scaly. Silly little boy.

I've got a goal set and now it's time to hit it.
